The Issue: 20-40% of homeless young people identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. Sexually transmitted infections and related health issues disproportionately impact queer and trans Canadians. Queer and trans people are more likely to experience sexual, physical, emotional and psychological abuse and violence. Discrimination ruins lives, limits potential and mars Canada’s proud reputation as an inclusive, safe and multicultural country where freedom is for everyone.
When 2SLGBTQIA+ people are in crisis and need support, local community services are their lifeline. They are the glue that holds our communities together through adversity, violence and discrimination. When a gay kid is kicked out, a trans person is abused, or a parent is struggling to understand and support their queer child, local queer organizations are there for them. But despite their critical role, these services are chronically underfunded, curtailing their ability to respond to the myriad and complex needs of the communities they serve.
Our Calls to Action
- For all candidates and political parties to pledge sustainable and to-scale funding for local 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations providing social, community and health services for vulnerable community members, including the continuation of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Capacity Building and Project Funds.
- For all candidates and political parties to commit to working alongside provinces, territories and municipalities to ensure all levels of government are playing their part and supporting delivery of local 2SLGBTQIA+ social, community and health services.
